Rowan County United Way Receives Grant for Teacher Effectiveness
Rowan County United Way has received a grant from United Way Worldwide (formerly United Way of America) for teacher effectiveness. The grant is for $137,500 and will be used to promote "Teachers Matter", a local theme. Our United Way was one of eleven in the country to receive this grant. The money will be used to help educators be more effective in keeping students from dropping out of school during their ninth grade year. There will be a group of individuals who will oversee the work and serve as the Teachers Matter Advisory Committee.
United Way Elects New Officers and Board Members
Rowan County United Way held its 55th Annual Meeting on March 19 at the Holiday Inn. President Dr. Grant Harrison presided over the meeting. He provided the invocation.
Carl Repsher, Campaign Cabinet member, reported a total of 1.5 million was raised through the fall campaign. He recognized the Campaign Cabinet, companies and others who made it possible.
The following officers were elected:

Dr. Harrison, outgoing president, spoke about the agency's accomplishments over the past year. He highlighted the increase in the campaign and how the community came together to support our agencies. He talked about the education grant of $137,500 from United Way Worldwide for teacher effectiveness and how that has enabled us to get more involved with our local school system. Our United Way was one of eleven in the country to receive this grant.
2010 Helping Hand Award
Dean Fields received the 2010 Helping Hand Award. This award is given to the United Way volunteer who rises above the rest to help meet the goals and objectives of our local United Way. Mr. Fields is currently serving his third year on the United Way Board of Directors. He serves on the LFCC for the Combined Federal Campaign, has been a Site Manager for Day of Caring and served as Chairman of the Public Employees Division for the Campaign Cabinet this past year.
After the awards Dr. Harrison passed the gavel to incoming President Guy Hoskins. Mr. Hoskins said he was honored to serve and asked the community for their support as he takes on this important role.
