Established in 1995, Service Above Self is a
program that recognizes young people in Rowan County for their
volunteer work. The Rowan County United Way and Rowan Rotary
sponsor the program based on the Rotary International’s
motto of “Service Above Self.”
Young people may be nominated for any type of service they
do. Those who can nominate include, but are not limited to,
teachers, mentors, tutors, neighbors, youth group leaders,
scout troop leaders, grandparents and parents. Students may
be nominated for such service as picking up a neighbor's paper
and bringing it to the door, reading to an elderly person,
raking a person's leaves, or visiting a nursing home.
