The Council is committed to strengthening families by reducing adolescent pregnancy and by providing family life education. The Adolescent and Family Enrichment Council of Rowan County, Inc., formerly the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Council, was founded in 1987. Since 1996, the Council has been a participating agency of the United Way. The Council has received funding from United Way, Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, Robertson Family Foundation, Smart Start Rowan, Salisbury Community Foundation, and March of Dimes.
Offering educational opportunities to the community for understanding
and promoting quality family life.
Open family life education programs and meetings. Development and dissemination of educational resources. Library, audio-visual, and other resources that support family life education which may be borrowed by educators and the public. The Speaker’s Bureau. Workshop leaders’ training and credit courses as needed. Consultation and program planning with schools, churches, civic clubs, and other organizations to develop programs that promote quality family life. Office Hours Monday - Friday Phone: (704) 630-0481 PARENT EDUCATION PROGRAMS Helping Children Cope with Divorce: Two part educational program for parents and adults experiencing separation or divorce helping to lessen the impact of divorce on children. Brady Bunch Illusion: Four-part series for blended families focusing on discipline, communication, legal rights, and marriage enrichment. Active Parenting/Active Parenting of Teens: Five-part
video based parent Nurturing Program: A series of classes for families to take together. Parents meet separately from children with trained facilitators while the children participate in self-esteem building activities in their own group. Three groups are offered: Parents and Children Birth to 5 (funded by Rowan Partnership for Children/Smart Start); Parents and Children 5 to 11; and Parents and Adolescents. Solo Parenting: Program for single parents which focuses on the unique challenges encountered by single parent families. Parents As Teachers: Home visitation program which focuses on child development for families with children ages birth to three years (funded by Rowan Partnership for Children/Smart Start).
Wise Guys: Self-responsibility as well as sexual responsibility training for boys ages 10-15. Topics include goal setting, sexuality, communication skills and parenthood. She Talk: Encourages self-responsibility for girls ages 10-15. Provides girls with tools to prevent early sexual involvement. Topics include goal setting, sexuality, communication skills, pregnancy risk and prevention. Parenting- Dealing With Tough Issues: Helps parents
communicate with their children about sexuality. Topics addressed include
physical and emotional development, Teens Taking Charge: Teaches abstinence; emphasizes communication, decision-making and assertiveness and teaches skills needed to say “no” to early sexual involvement. Good Beginnings for Teen Parents: Program for pregnant and parenting teens. Designed to prevent child abuse and neglect and to reduce subsequent pregnancies. Encourages pre-and postnatal care.
